SUMMER FRAGRANCE TENDENCIES: HOW TO CHOOSE A SCENT FOR A NORTHERN EUROPEAN SUMMER

This summer, niche perfumery is highlighting several fragrance themes: skin-like scents; salty seaside moods; juicy fruit notes; and lighter, cooler gourmand-style fragrances with nuances of tea, coffee, creamy musk or dry vanilla.

SUMMER FRAGRANCE TENDENCIES: HOW TO CHOOSE A SCENT FOR A NORTHERN EUROPEAN SUMMER

This summer, several fragrance themes are especially noticeable in niche perfumery - skin-like scents; salty seaside moods; juicy fruit notes; and lighter, cooler gourmand-style fragrances with nuances of tea, coffee, creamy musk or dry vanilla.

On social media, these tendencies appear quickly and change just as quickly. One moment, the focus is on clean, almost invisible scents; the next, it is peach, fig, saltiness, sea air, cool tea or fragrances that do not fill the whole room, but stay closer to the skin.

At the same time - fragrances behave differently in summer. Not only because the weather is warmer and more humid, but also because we wear lighter, looser clothes, move more and spend more time outside. All of this affects skin temperature and perspiration, which in turn influences how fragrance molecules evaporate and interact with the skin.

Still, fragrance tendencies should be approached with some caution. Not everything that looks good in a short video or sounds appealing in a description works equally well on the skin in our climate. Especially in a Northern European summer, which is often cooler, more humid and more changeable than a classic southern summer.

That is why this is not just a list of what is currently popular. It is more of a short guide to understanding these tendencies and choosing a fragrance that will actually be wearable in everyday life in our climate.

1. SALTY AND SKIN-LIKE SCENTS

One of the most noticeable summer themes is fragrances that do not try to be very “loud”. They are more likely to remind you of clean skin, fresh sea air, salt on the skin after swimming in the sea, a dry airy T-shirt after a day outside and a light mineral freshness.

These are not classic summer “fresh citrus” fragrances. They are softer, closer to the body and often much more elegant for everyday wear.

For a Northern European summer, these fragrances are especially suitable because they strongly echo the smell of air in seaside towns. Here, fragrances often have to work not in intense heat, but in wind, changing temperatures, on clothing and during cooler evenings. In these conditions, sharp freshness can become intrusive, while a salty, clean and skin-like scent often creates a soft, natural atmosphere of freshness.

SPOTS recommends: a skin-like musk with a light mineral freshness - discreet, but noticeable up close: MAISON VIOLET RIVAGE

2. FRUITS RETURN, BUT NOT IN A SWEET VERSION

Fruit notes are very current this summer, but the most interesting ones are not childishly sweet. In niche perfumery, fruits can be much more nuanced: peach with musk, fig with green leaves, citrus with bitterness, blackcurrant with woods or tropical fruits with a salty background.

This is a good fragrance theme for those who want something more energetic and summery, but do not want a scent that smells like a sweet drink or candy.

When choosing a fruity fragrance, balance is the most important thing. If only sweet, sugary notes remain after the first few minutes, it can become tiring in summer. If there is greenery, musk, woods, tea or a light bitterness in the background, the fragrance usually becomes much easier to wear.

SPOTS recommends: a juicy, but not overly sweet fragrance - fruits with a clean, greener or woodier background:

3. SUMMER GOURMAND FRAGRANCES BECOME AIRIER

Gourmand fragrances are still current, but in summer they become softer. At the moment, the more interesting versions are not thick vanilla, caramel and dessert-like scents, but cooler interpretations: tea, coffee, rice milk, almond, dry vanilla, creamy musk or light cocoa.

These fragrances are suitable for those who find classic fresh scents too sharp, but wintery sweet fragrances too heavy.

In a Northern European summer, they can work especially well in the evening, after rain or on a cooler day. They give a sense of comfort, but do not necessarily become heavy. The main thing is not to look only for sweetness, but for texture - softness, creaminess and a clean drydown.

SPOTS recommends: a creamy, calm fragrance with the feeling of tea, coffee, musk and dry vanilla:

FRAGRANCES OPEN DIFFERENTLY IN SUMMER

The same fragrance can feel surprisingly different in winter and in summer. Not because the fragrance itself changes, but because everything around it changes: skin temperature, air humidity, wind, clothing, daylight and even the environment in which we wear the scent.

In warmth, a fragrance usually starts to open more quickly. Top notes - citrus, green notes, fruits, spices or aromatic accords - can appear brighter and faster. But they can also disappear more quickly. That is why some fragrances feel very energetic at first in summer, but become quieter after a while than they do in winter.

There is also the opposite situation. Fragrances that feel closed, cold or almost inactive in winter can suddenly become much more interesting in summer. Warmer skin and summer air help them “move”. Nuances appear that may remain hidden in winter: greenery, saltiness, flowers, tea, musk, woods or creaminess.

This is why we often see two very different scenarios. There are fragrances that feel intense, clear and multi-layered in winter, but become flat or too dense in summer. And there are fragrances that seem quiet or almost expressionless in winter, but suddenly open more widely in summer and show their character.

The emotional background also matters. In summer, there is more light, more greenery, more movement and more fresh air around us. In winter, the environment is often greyer, drier, more closed and heavier. That is why a fragrance that feels warm, comforting and right in winter may feel too heavy in summer. And a fragrance that feels too transparent in winter can become very precise and beautiful in summer.

Summer itself is not always the same either. A warm, dry day; a humid day after rain; and a cool evening by the sea can all give the same fragrance a completely different feeling.

That is why a summer fragrance should not be judged only by the first spray on a paper strip. It is much more important to apply it to the skin and see what happens after one or two hours. That is when it becomes clear whether the fragrance becomes more alive in a summer climate, too quiet, too sweet, too sharp or, on the contrary, much more interesting than expected.

A small testing tip: paper shows the beginning of a fragrance well. Skin shows its true character. If possible, test the fragrance on skin and return to it after one or two hours. In summer, this often tells you more than the first impression in store.

FRAGRANCES SHOULD BE WORN DIFFERENTLY IN SUMMER

In summer, fragrances should be worn differently than in winter. In winter, a scent often meets cooler skin, drier air, thicker clothing and less natural body heat. In summer, everything becomes more active - the skin is warmer, the body moves more, perspiration increases, and the fragrance reaches the air more quickly.

That is why a smaller dose often works better in summer. You do not always need more sprays for a fragrance to be noticeable. Sometimes, a smaller amount is exactly what allows the scent to remain more elegant and cleaner.

A good starting point is one or two precise sprays on pulse points. If the fragrance is light, it can be refreshed during the day. This is usually better and more effective than applying too much in the morning and hoping the scent will last all day. Refreshing a fragrance during the day is normal in summer.

In summer, the place where you apply the fragrance becomes especially important. On warmer pulse points, the scent will open more actively. On clothing, it will often last longer and radiate more softly, but it may not open as vividly and with as much variation as it does on the skin. In practice, a combination can work well: one spray on the skin and one very light spray on clothing or near the hair, if the fragrance is suitable for that.

A fragrance should not be rubbed after application. It is better to let it dry naturally. This helps the scent open more naturally and avoids disturbing its initial structure.

On a very hot or humid day, heavier, sweeter and more resinous fragrances should be worn more carefully - in a smaller dose or in the evening. On a cooler summer day, after rain or in the evening, deeper scents can work very well: tea, musk, woods, dry vanilla, patchouli or leather.

In summer, you do not have to look only for a “fresh” fragrance. It is better to look for a scent that opens correctly at a particular time and place: sometimes it will be a clean musk; sometimes a salty seaside theme; sometimes a green fruit; sometimes a light gourmand fragrance; and sometimes - a fragrance you barely noticed in winter, but that finally starts to breathe and come alive in warmth.

That is why, for summer, it is often worth looking not for a stronger fragrance, but for a more suitable one - one that opens well on the skin, outside, on a real day and in a Northern European climate.
